Skin cancer is by far the most common type of cancer. The two most common types are basal cell cancer and squamous cell cancer. They usually appear on the head, face, neck, hands and arms (areas with greater sun damage, but can appear anywhere on the body.

The third type of skin cancer, melanoma, is less common, but it is the most dangerous form of skin cancer. Anyone can get skin cancer, but it is more common in people who spend a lot of time in the sun or have suffered sunburn.

Other risk factors are:
  • Having light skin, hair and eyes
  • Having a family member with skin cancer
  • Be over 50 years old
The first sign may be a small bump of slow growth, a mole changing, or a dry patch, red or yellow, rough and scaly. The key to detecting skin cancer in the early stages is to know your skin well and let your dermatologist examine it frequently.

The suspicious skin marks and any change in the appearance of the skin are reason for consultation. When they are treated before they spread, most skin cancers can be cured. Even melanoma, a type of skin cancer that can spread quickly, is curable when treated early.

If you have skin cancer, it is important to know what type it has because it affects your treatment options and the prognosis.
